Little did she know her husband has had the idea for months to commission me to paint his wife a painting. Not just any painting but a painting of her. Tyler and I have been talking and brainstorming about this piece since early summer!
Originally he had the idea of having me paint an abstract portrait of whitney. As we talked he landed on me painting an abstract painting of her non figure form, I couldn't agree more with that decision. He told me that they have both been admiring a lot of abstract art lately and that he knew she would love an abstract piece as well. I should also say that Whitney is one of my best friends. I know her so well, so I had a direct connection to this piece. I loved painting it. Someitmes I paint abstract pieces based on a person. I did this with my daughter Sallie-Jewel. I think of words or images that remind me of her. I told Tyler to do this for me. He did and it is so sweet to hear what he admires and loves about Whitney and the cool thing for me is that I totally knew exactly where he was coming from with those admiratons because I shared so many for Whitney too. Here are some phrases and words he gave me about Whitney for this piece:
"I love her hair in a high messy ponytail, I love it all the time but her hair this way really compliments her face structure"
"she has a casual natural beauty"
"she funky and sporty, sort of a tomboy but really feminine too"
"she is playful and has a certain innocence and totally trusting spirit"
"she is kind, gracious, warm"
"she is hilarious" I say she is the funniest person I know ;)
" there is a calmness about her too"
"she looks really pretty in red and black, it looks pretty with her skin"
"she is so honest and open to everyone"
So sweet. I wanted this piece to have a funky, edgy, playful side, but I also wanted it to feel soft, feminine and natural.I have some part that seem more orderly and contained, like her tendencies for organization but there are areas that have paint taken away representing natural beauty and casual beauty.
I felt a deep connection to this piece. Whit, you are so loved by many. It is so neat that you have impacted not only your husband but me by just being exactly who you are. You make me laugh more than anyone else, you're so fun!! Your honesty and vulnerably and willingness to expose your deepest parts makes me want to do that more. AND who else can I rap a whole conversation with, no one. Love you Whitney!!! Oh and look at this beauty. This photo was taken by the talented Shelly Goodman. Her shirt and bracelet were a big inspiration for this piece.
